If you’re looking for a family day out that feels like more than a soft play run, Lincoln Castle delivers. It's one of the few places in the city where kids, adults, and even teenagers will all find something to get stuck into — without it feeling like a history lesson.
Start with the Wall Walk
The full Medieval Wall Walk circles the entire castle, giving you panoramic views across the city and into the cathedral grounds. It’s surprisingly long (⅓ mile), with towers, lookouts, and plenty of opportunities for kids to imagine themselves as knights or guards. Warning: it’s not buggy-friendly — so bring a carrier or leave the pushchair downstairs.
Victorian Prison: Creepy in a good way
Inside the castle grounds sits a fully preserved Victorian prison, complete with original cells, punishment regimes, and audio stories that bring it to life. It’s strange, slightly eerie, and oddly engaging for younger visitors — especially if they’re into “horrible histories” type stuff.
Magna Carta Vault
One of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta lives here, along with the Charter of the Forest. The display is short, sharp, and good for a quick wander. Younger kids might breeze past it, but older ones (and the adults) will get the significance.
Bonus: Space to run
The central grassed area is a lifesaver — plenty of space for younger ones to burn off energy, sit and eat lunch, or just unwind before heading back into the city. They often run family trails and seasonal events here too — especially around school holidays.
